In this video, Dr. Martha Hall, a Board Certified Acupuncturist and a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine will explain “what is functional medicine and how it works”.

Functional medicine is a patient centered practice that focuses on optimal function of the body and its organs that allows the patients and clinicians to work together to address the underlying causes of their issues and promote optimal wellness by healing the body in a holistic and alternative way.

It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle which helps the doctor to understand their patients so they can personalize a treatment plan that can help lead patients to an improved healthy outcome. Dr. Hall do this by addressing the root cause rather than the symptoms.

“I start getting swelling with these hard ones and on my body, she was able to immediately find a way to help me with those”, says Dr. Hall’s patient.

Clinicians like Dr. Hall, hold in by identifying the difficulty of complaint. They may find one condition has many different causes and likewise one cause may result in many different conditions.

“I tell my patients, that the body is always trying to talk to us. We just don’t know how to listen and we don’t know how to understand it. An example would be a burp, that is a sign that the gallbladder needs help in digesting fats. Or if you have gas and it smells, your body cannot digest proteins or if you have gas and it doesn’t smell, it tells that your body cannot digest carbohydrates”, says Dr. Hall.

Here are another examples according to Dr. Hall.

If a patient grind their teeth at night or has receding gum lines most likely the patient has parasites. And depending on where a headache is, it tells what is going on inside the body. An example would be if the patient has just a right sided headache many times, that is a gallbladder issue. Headache in the back of the head that tells that the patient’s most likely potassium deficient which can also lead to heart palpitations which will also lead to anxiety and or dry mouth. The patient can have just one or all of these symptoms.

So in this last case Dr. Hall would prescribe a prescription grade Whole Food potassium supplement to help nurse the body’s deficiency. That is an example of Functional Medicine at work.

“Increasing my energy, vitality. Yes she really has helped me a lot”, says Dr. Hall’s patient.
